The Oceanographer of Tomorrow
Scripps Institution of Oceanography is dedicated to the challenge of the ocean. The institutions mission is to train professional oceanographers to be teachers, independent researchers, or both. But opportunities are not limited to these two directions. Ships require crews; libraries must be staffed; electronic, biological, and chemical technicians are needed. Positions for specialists are available, and opportunities occasionally exist for those already out of school to move up through on-the-job training.
Opportunities for oceanographers at all levels may be found in the community of governmental laboratories and in the academic or industrial communities.
Many believe that our future is ultimately tied to penetrating the mysteries of the ocean. It would be difficult to identify a more important, absorbing, and rewarding field of inquiry than oceanography. Decades of research can be dedicated to studying and developing marine resources, recovering mineral and other marine assets, and harvesting food. As problems are solved and new problems arise, areas of investigation are limited only by the imagination.
